This workshop integrates sustainability education with art through upcycling activities. Upcycling is the practice of creating a new product from discarded objects or material. It offers a unique approach to learning about sustainable lifestyles in a fun and enjoyable manner.

- Create a beautiful piece of artwork customized to your own preferences using a sustainable approach.

Participants will:
- Observe an artist’s painting techniques.
- Create an earth friendly handmade craft that can be recycled at the end of its life with the guidance of the artist instructor.
- Use recycled materials, corrugated cardboard and plastic bottles for the materials in your craft.
- Choose a craft from the list below or pick one of the characters from Nature’s Ride Theatre. See a sample of the crafts under the PHOTOS tab.

After the Workshop, participants will be able to do the following:
- Comprehend different types of waste in the world.
- Apply upcycling techniques to create art out of waste that would normally be recycled or disposed of in a landfill.
- Identify the benefits, other than art, of upcycling as they relate to a sustainable lifestyle.
- Grasp the connection between art and science.

Length:
Duration of workshop: 60 Minutes (1 hour)
Exception: Picture frames take more time and require 120 minutes (2 hours) to complete.Grade Level:

Cost: $17 CAD per participant- Each participant makes either two crafts or one picture frame.
- Workshop includes paints, brushes, glue, and pre-cut crafts.

Can the content of the workshop be customized to address both science and art?
Yes, the content of the workshop can be customized to topics the students are learning in their science as well as social sciences classes.Can the pre-cut crafts or a completed pre-cut craft be purchased for birthday or holiday presents?

Can Upcycling Workshops be offered as an activity at birthday parties, schools and libraries?
Yes, the workshops are flexible and can be offered at almost any event.Can Nature Theatre be combined with an Upcycling Workshop?
Yes, many of the upcycling crafts are animals contained in the books, which are used in the Nature’s Ride Theatre performances. Thus, a theatre performance followed by an upcycling workshop works quite nicely. The two workshops can be completed on the same day or on different days.
